177. Web-Series Reviews – 32

Currently I am reading and watching Arne Dahl.  Arne Dahl is a Swedish author whose books have had a major success.  He has written 10 books on A-Unit or Intercrime series.  These books have been made into web-series with 2 season of 10 episodes each.  Each book is depicted in 2 episodes.  I read the book and then watch the 2 episodes😊!!  Presently 3 books have been completed and the resultant episodes seen!!  The last 5 books, unfortunately, have not yet been translated into English, so I have to do with only watching the episodes!! Will review the series sometime later…

Some more web-series reviews…

Flower of Evil – Flower of Evil is a South Korean television series which premiered in Netflix in 2020.

Baek Hee Sung is a man who hides his identity and past from his wife Cha Ji Won, a detective. On the surface, they appear to be the perfect family: a loving couple with a beautiful daughter who adores her parents. Cha Ji Won and her colleagues begin investigating a series of unexplained murders and is confronted with the reality that her seemingly perfect husband may be hiding something from her.

An excellent series comprising about 16 episodes, each about an hour and 10-15 minutes long! The story has several twists and turns.  According to me, the 16th episode could have been shorter.  All the other episodes were taut and interesting.  Maybe South Korean series have a fixation for 16 episodes for all serials, as the last 2 Stranger series that I had reviewed earlier, were also 16 episodes long.  Definitely worth a watch!

Shetland – Created from the novels by award winning crime writer Ann Cleeves, Shetland follows DI Jimmy Perez and his team as they investigate crime within the close-knit island community. In this isolated and sometimes inhospitable environment, the team have to rely on a uniquely resourceful style of policing. Set against a hauntingly beautiful landscape, Shetland is based on the best-selling books such as Red Bones, Raven Black, Dead Water and Blue Lightning.

Excellent series and worth watching.  Started in 2014 and had done 5 seasons till 2019.  Each episode is of about an hour each.  Initial 2 seasons were about Ann Cleeves book and each book had 2 episodes of about an hour each.  The last 3 seasons, each had an entire story told over 6 episodes.  The series has been given approval for 2 more seasons and the shooting for both were supposed to start from Feb 2021.

One of the reviews from www.imdb.com ….

This is a wonderful series ...I'm watching S1 & S2 again for the 2nd time in less than a month. The writing is great, so is the acting, the characters are 3-D & interesting, not from stock. The stories do share some sameness...there's a murder (maybe 2) in a small, place that's fairly isolated, in one part or other of the Shetland Isles. There're several potential suspects. The stories & mysteries are the kind that seem like what could happen in any small town, village, or big city, for that matter; the types of things that happen to real people, as opposed to dramatic, wild, over-the-top happenin's. Not as cozy as a drawing room mystery, but easy to relate to.

The islands play a big part in the series; as at least one other reviewer observed, the land & sea are pretty much main characters as well as the people. Beautifully filmed in a gorgeous (if minimalist) land, the scenery makes me want to go there to get in touch with my own Scottish roots.

Lovely series; I hope the Beeb has more sense than most of US TV decision-makers & keeps it up (this show wouldn't have lasted a full season on a US channel...too intelligent & classy).

It occurred to me mid-way thru the second run thru that part of what I like about the characters is that the actors look like real people, rather than the plastic Barbie/Ken people that we get on US TV shows; older characters may have belly bulges or wrinkles. Most look as if they've never been near a Botox needle. There are very attractive people, and some very unattractive people. Realistic people. What a concept!

Cheers till next time!!
