67 Interesting Background on these Hindi Songs
Sorry
for a long break!! Let’s call it just
laziness and proceed further π
I have a USB stick in my car where I listen to songs whenever I
drive. As of today, I have about 1000+ Hindi and close to around 500 Tamil
songs. All of these are super hits (according to me π) and
have been meticulously collected by me over the years. They range from the year 1960’s to the
present. In some of the songs, there is
an intro by a singer or a musician before the song. I am just representing the same here so that
you too can be aware of this. I found
all of them to be interesting, so I am just sharing it with you. This post may extend to 2 pages and I hope
you won’t mind it this time!!ππ
A majority of the 6 songs feature the one playback singer I admire
the most – Kishore Kumar. Of course, I
admire all of them; as I can’t sing like them π, but
Kishore is just something else. Almost a
majority of the 1000+ Hindi songs that I have, is of him!! Enjoy the musical journey and Kishore’s
antics belowππ.
This is Asha Bhosle’s rendition – Once RD Burman gave a song to Asha
Bhosle and asked her to sing it. She
found it somewhat tough. When she
mentioned it to RD Burman, he said he will change it. This made her angry and she said I will
practice it for 15 days and then sing it.
She told him if we cannot sing as per the situation, then we cannot call
ourselves playback singers. She
practiced the song and then went for the recording. After the recording was done, she says RD
Burman came to her and gave her a hundred rupee note and said “Wow, How great
you have sung this!!”. The song was Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyaar Tera and the tune
was Aa Aa Aa Jaa, Aa a a Aa Jaa. You can
see the song here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTgbq5vXJD8
Another of Asha Bhosle’s rendition – During one of her duet songs
with Kishore Kumar, she started to hum when Kishore was supposed to sing. During those days, final recording was done
with all the musicians and singers together and if there was any
disturbance/fault, they need to record it again without that fault. During the
song, when Kishore was supposed to sing, Asha started humming “O” and then she
realized she was wrong and stopped. She
then looked at Kishore Kumar. Kishore
motioned her to continue the recording of the song and not to stop for this
fault. When the recording ended, Asha
went to Kishore and said she was sorry and let’s do it again as she had hummed
when Kishore was supposed to sing.
Kishore told her, don’t worry, I am the Hero of the movie!! When the heroine will start to hum, I will
place my hand over her mouth, “bas”!! ππ. The song was Piya
Piya Piya Mera Jiya Pukare. You can see
the gem here at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmdtYWFMtFo
and see Kishore’s hand covering the heroine’s mouth at the 2:19-2:21 minutes mark
in the song!!
Ashok Kumar’s rendition – When Kishore started making movies on his
own, he came to me and said he wanted to sing “Koi Humdam Na Raha” and wanted
to use it in his movie. Ashok Kumar had
sung it in 1936 in a movie called Jeevan Naiya. Ashok Kumar told him it is
difficult and it has to be sung in “14 maatraas”. Kishore told him he does not know any “14
maatraas” or such thing and told him he will sing it better than him. You can see Ashok Kumar’s talking and his
song here at https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=111&v=u4DWfMDGvlY
and then Kishore’s version for Jhumroo in 1961 here at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmmX30DoXdM
RD Burman’s rendition – When RD Burman approached Kishore to sing
“Mere Naina Saawan Baadhon” for Mehbooba, Kishore first refused to sing. In the film the song is sung twice, once in
Female voice and then in a Male voice. Kishore
asked RD Burman to let Lata Mangeshkar sing it first. RD Burman requested Lata Mangeshkar and she
agreed to sing it first. After the
recording, RD Burman told Kishore that this raag is Shivranjani and he should
sing it in that raag. Kishore said “Shivaranjani
ki aisi ki thaisi, you give me this recording, I will byheart it and then sing
it”. He listed to Lata’s rendition for 7
days and then came for his recording. RD
Burman says when Kishore started singing the song, it never looked like he was singing
it after byhearting and it felt like he was singing from his heart!! You can see the Lata’s version at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0InAY07FRi4
and Kishore’s version here at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vPjMX17qC4
Salil Chaudhry (might be) – “During the recording of songs of Half
Ticket, there was a duet song with Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. But at that time, maybe Lata was unwell or
out of the city. Kishore suggested to me
that he will sing in both the Male and Female voices. I thought maybe he was joking. But he sang and convinced me, reverting from
Male voice to Female and then again to Male voice and we went ahead with
that.” Check out another of Kishore’s
gem here at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks3Js2bEh4w. Moreover, Kishore dresses up as a Female and
Pran is the Male dancer. Kishore sings for himself in the Female voice and for
Pran in his original voice, with his usual panacheππ. And this
combination/camaraderie between them in the song takes the song to a much
higher level!!
Amit Kumar (son of Kishore Kumar) mentioned about this in one of his
interviews. The song is Jai Jai Shiv
Shankar from Aap Ki Kasam. Apparently,
the producer of the song said he will pay only Rs 50,000 for the song whereas
Kishore Kumar demanded more. The
producer did not agree. So, at the end
of the song, Kishore mentioned in the song itself that Rs 50,000 has been paid
and we should play the music with honestyππ. You can see this
another gem here at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mpy0UzbHNr0
. You can hear his comments in the
song from 5:50 minutes mark onwards!!
Nobody knows how this passed the final cut during editing time!!!
Cheers!! Hopefully I will be able to post regularly from next week
onwards!!
