32 Do What You Want To Do

Do what you have to do, to do what you want to do.  These are the words by Denzel Washington, a famous Hollywood actor.  After listening to others and doing what I am supposed to do, as per what others wanted me to do, I have reached the conclusion that you have to do what you want to do.  Nothing else matters.  I have reached this conclusion very late, but not so late in life!!

Of course, when you are young, you are supposed to listen to your parents and do whatever they are telling you to do. Once you get married, you sometimes listen to your spouse and sometimes do what you want to do.  As long as you don’t force your spouse to do your bidding, you can do whatever you want to do.  Letting your spouse do the things their own way is good.  That way you will not be responsible for anything going wrong😊. 

Moreover, even if something goes wrong, they will correct it the next time.  As long as you give space to others to do their own thing, you have also earned the right to do your own thing.  You have to ensure that doing your own thing does not encroach upon anyone else’s personal space.  As long as no one is affected by your doing, all will be well.  In case your actions are going to affect them, just tell them your reasons for your actions, convince them and then proceed with their blessings.

In case you do not like something, just tell the person about it.  In case he/she listens to you and stops doing that, you have got your wish. In case he/she is not ready to listen and keeps doing the same things, it is better to ignore the person and carry on with your life.  You have to stop living the way others want you to and live life the way you want it.

There is a classic song by Kishore Kumar in the movie Amar Prem – kuch tho log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna, chodo bekaar ki baaton mein kahin beet na jaaye raina.  Just apply this principle in your life and just ignore people who want to change you.  Another para from the same song goes like this – kuch reet jagat ki aisi hai, har ek subah ki raat hui, tu kaun hai tera naam hai kya, Seeta bhi yahan badnaam hui, phir kyon sansaar ki baaton se bheeg gaye tere naina? 

If you feel that your spouse or kids needs your advice as you feel they are not doing something right, just tell them once.  If they listen, it is good.  If they don’t, then also it is good.  Two things will happen.  If they are proved wrong, then they will listen to you the next time.  If they are proved right, you have just taught them to be firm with their decision, irrespective of who is advising them.

As you want to do your own thing, you have to let others also do their own thing.  Just encourage them to do it on their own.  Live life your way and not on another’ highway😊
