79. Delhi Explored!!
National War
Memorial – this is the latest attraction in New Delhi. This was inaugurated this February. The entrance is through India Gate and the attraction
is well-intentioned!! This is just behind
the canopy of India Gate.
The place is
well spaced out and is in the open. You
have the names of all the Indian armed forces personnel who have been martyred in
various wars, mentioned here. Their rank
and their regiment names are also mentioned.
So, for the armed forces personnel who genuinely felt that their
sacrifices are not being recognized, this memorial is a genuine tribute. Their names are etched forever here.
There is also an
Amar Jyoti that burns throughout, like in India Gate. And you have an armed force personnel
guarding the main circle at all times.
There are also some murals being depicted here and each mural also has a
small write-up on the background and the outcome of the war for which the mural
is being depicted. A definite must-visit next time you are in Delhi.
Paranthe Waali
Gali – This is a famous eating place in Delhi.
Even though I have lived in Delhi for around 30 years before, I had
never been to this place. While googling
it, it was mentioned that it is about a kilometer from the Chandni Chowk metro
station. But when I asked someone at the
station, they showed a short-cut, through which I was able to reach the place
in just 2 minutes from the station!! The
shop that I visited was the same that I saw during my googling. This shop was established in 1872!! Purely vegetarian restaurant and they serve
only paranthas and of course, lassi. You
can check out the menu below.
The owner said
that the ingredients are prepared by himself and not by the other people
working there. It is supposed to have
been handed down from generations. The
ingredients are raw and hence when they are kept inside the parantha, it is
fried so that the ingredients inside gets cooked. Even though the parantha is fried, the oil
does not stick to the hands, much. You have
to order a minimum of 2 paranthas. So
everyone orders 2 different varieties😊. The accompaniments
include 2 potato curries, one banana-tamarind chutney, one khatti chutney and
one more curry. Even though the board in
the shop says the accompaniments are sufficient for 2 paranthas, they give
unlimited refills on the accompaniments.
Overall, a must-visit when you are in Delhi. There are only 4-5 of these shops here that
have been there for more than 100 years!!
Recently I read Jeffery
Archer’s latest book, Heads You Win. The
story is of a boy and his mother. They had to leave Russia as the boy’s father
has been killed and these 2 might be the next in line. While fleeing Russia, they have a choice –
either board a box that is being smuggled to UK or board a box that is being smuggled
to USA!! They flip a coin and enter the
box. From here the story splits into two – what if they selected the box going
to USA and what if they selected the box going to UK!! The book reminds you of Kane and Abel and how
the characters were moving along the time!!
Both the stories are told simultaneously and you would not be confused
as to which story is whose!! Of course,
there is a twist at the end. In fact,
the last WORD of the book is the twist😊!!! For people who have not read it, don’t see
the last word of the book before finishing the book😊!!
Cheers until next time!!
