105. Destiny & Bollywood and Deewar tidbits!!
There are many
instances of stars refusing movies in Hindi film industry that have gone on to
become super-duper hits. These stars had
refused the movie because of the director not agreeing to their changes, or they
not believing that the movie will work or some date issues. The stars who got these rejected films went
on to become superstars or established their star-status on the basis of these
films. If you want to make it big in
Bollywood, you need Destiny to partner you😊!!
When I started
researching this, I thought there will only be a handful of such films. But the
list was big!! Most of the stars would
have cursed their luck on seeing these films do wonders after their release!!
Following is the
list of Stars who refused These films: -
Kangana Ranaut
refused Dirty Picture
Akshay Kumar
refused Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Hrithik Roshan
refused Swades
Salman Khan
refused Chak De thinking it will not work
Hrithik Roshan
and Abhishek Bachchan refused Dil Chahta Hai
Shahrukh Khan
refused Munnabhai MBBS and Lagaan
Saif Ali Khan
refused Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge
Kareena Kapoor
refused Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Kal Ho Na Ho and Raam
Leela!!
Armaan Kohli
refused Deewana. Deewana was the movie
that catapulted Shahrukh Khan into the big league!!
Dharmendra,
Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raaj Kumar refused Zanjeer
As they say, one
person’s loss is another’s windfall😊😊
There is one
more iconic Hindi song that went on to win an Oscar for the Best Original
Song. This song was given by the music
director to Subhash Ghai for his movie Yuvraaj with Salman Khan. Fortunately,
or unfortunately, Subhash Ghai did not use this song in his movie. Later the music director, after taking
approval from Subhash Ghai, gave this song to a Hollywood Director and as they
say, rest is history😊. The music director – A R Rahman, the
Hollywood Director – Danny Boyle and the song – Jai Ho😊😊, from Slumdog Millionaire!!
Deewar has been
an iconic movie in the Hindi film industry.
Supposed to be loosely based on Haaji Mastaan, a Mumbai mafia don’s
life, it gave us the epic dialogue “Mere Paas Maa Hai”!! I came across the following interesting items
about this movie: -
Rajesh Khanna
was interested in doing this movie.
Knowing that Rajesh Khanna is in, Vyjayanti Mala agreed to do the
mother’s role. When Rajesh Khanna was
discarded, Vyjayanti Mala also said “no” to the movie. Apparently Shatrughan Sinha was also being
considered for the role before it went to Amitabh Bachchan.
Waheeda Rehman
was then finalized for the mother’s role.
During the same time, Yash Chopra, who made Deewar, was also busy
shooting Kabhie Kabhie with Amitabh and Waheeda as husband and wife. He then felt that since they are being paired
with each other in Kabhie Kabhie, the public might not like to see them in a
mother-son role😊. Hence Waheeda was rejected
and replaced by Nirupa Roy!!
During the
Filmfare awards in 1976 (Deewar was released in 1975), Deewar was nominated in
9 award categories. It won awards in 7
of those categories. Guess who did not get
the awards😊? Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress,
namely Amitabh Bachchan and Nirupa Roy😊!! Best Actor was won that year by Sanjeev Kumar for Aandhi and the
Best Supporting Actress by Nadira for Julie!!
By the way, another
movie was also nominated that year in 9 categories, having released in 1975. This movie went on to become the most iconic Hindi
movie of all times and was also recognized as the Movie of the Millennium. Surprisingly, the movie won only 1 award at
the Filmfares’ that year and that was for – Best Editing😊😊!! And the name of
the movie was SHOLAY😊😊!!
Cheeers!!
