118. Spanish Movies
With lockdown in
place, the ideal time for this blog😊😊!!
I first came
across a Spanish movie when Amitabh Bachchan’s Badla was released. I went and saw the movie and I have written
about it in an earlier blog (Blog No 68).
After seeing the movie, I got the Spanish version (The Invisible Guest) which
was the movie from which Badla was copied.
I say copied, as the entire scenes were simply lifted and portrayed in
the Hindi version.
The impact of
the Spanish movie was such that I went to www.imdb.com
(another topic that I had mentioned about earlier, Blog No 13) and searched for
other movies similar to the Invisible Guest.
It gave me a lot of options. I
started seeing those movies. You can see below the names and a brief
summary. I was simple awestruck seeing
the range of thriller movies that they had come up with. I hope whenever you find time, you will be
able to see these movies and enjoy them.
The synopsis is from www.imdb.com
The Body – “In
the middle of the night, a guard working the night shift at a morgue located
deep in the woods has a terrible car accident. But, why did the guard panic and
left his post in the first place? Furthermore, according to the register, the
body of Mayka – a beautiful and affluent businesswoman – is mysteriously
missing from the morgue. Presumably, Mayka died of a heart attack;
nevertheless, who signed the death certificate, as her autopsy is still
pending? In the end, there is a general principle in forensic medicine which
specifically states that every death is a homicide until proven otherwise. But,
finding out who is behind this fiendishly difficult case is going to be an
arduous task. Can Inspector Jaime Peña get to the bottom of it?” It is basically a revenge movie. You will
have to see it to know who gets revenge and who gets affected by it😊. Bollywood came up with a copy with the same
name and having Rishi Kapoor and Emraan Hashmi.
I confirm I have not seen it and have no intention also😊!!
The Bar – “On an
ordinary day in bustling downtown Madrid, life ticks over as usual, while
inside a decrepit and noisy central bar, a motley assortment of common
urbanites is killing time indolently, up until a loud gunshot sends chills down
the spine. Out of the blue, now a man lies dead in front of the bar in a pool
of blood, and then surprisingly, in broad daylight, another death follows.
Where did that mysterious lethal bullet come from? Is this an act of terrorism
or is there a solitary invisible sniper hidden on a roof? As hysteria prevails
and the bodies miraculously vanish into thin air, the perplexed and terrified
bar's regulars are bound to turn on each other, paranoid and suspicious of the
potential assassin who might be hiding inside the place. Is there indeed a wolf
among sheep?” A movie that starts as simple and ends up being something
else. Very good study of human nature
when an unseen-disaster strikes. Almost
95-97% of the movie takes place inside the bar.
The Hidden Face
– “Adrián, a talented orchestra conductor, receives a video message from his
beloved Belén, telling him with tears in her eyes that she is leaving him, and
that she cannot carry on with him anymore. Shattered by the unexpected news of
their irreversible break-up and puzzled by Belén's inexplicable decision,
Adrián gets help from the local police to solve this mysterious case of
disappearance; however, as there is still no news of Belén, a new woman will
appear in his life. In the end, with no progress at all in Belén's baffling
case, who would think to look beyond the facts, as truth often lies hidden in
the most unusual of places?” A very nice
movie where fate decides what happens.
If you are destined for something, you end up getting it😊. A very nice twist in the end too. And of course, it also touches upon the human
nature in us!!
Mirage – “On
November 9, 1989 (the same day the Wall of Berlin falls), Nico is a 12-year-old
boy passionate about videotaping himself while playing guitar. He is being
raised by his single mother María. On the same night, a 72-hour electric storm
breaks out, and Nico looking through his room window witnesses a violent scene
in the house of his neighbour, Ángel Prieto. He ventures into the house and
stumbles on Hilda Weiss, Prieto's wife, lying dead in the house. Running scared
from Prieto, who has discovered him in his home, Nico is run over by a passing
car and dies as a result. Twenty-five years later, on November 9th, 2014, Vera
Roy is a woman who divides her time between working as nurse in the hospital
and her family: her husband David Ortiz and her little daughter Gloria. To
celebrate moving into their new house in the suburbs, they invite her friend
and former boyfriend Aitor Medina and his mother Clara to their house where
Vera learns that she and David are living in Nico's house and ...”😊. A very nice movie where we get to see the
same people in two different eras and what happened to them in the past and present
and how it all turns out in the end.
Julia’s Eyes – “After
the death of the blind Sara, who hanged herself in the basement of her house,
her twin sister Julia suspects that she was actually murdered. Julia has a
degenerative problem with her eyes and is losing her sight, and she temporarily
moves with her husband Isaac to Sara's house to arrange her funeral. Julia goes
to the Centro Baumann for the blind, which Sara frequented, and she learns from
other members that Sara had a boyfriend. Julia is chased by a mysterious man,
but police inspector Dimas does not believe her. Julia follows Sara's last
steps trying to find the identity of her secret lover. Julia is surrounded by
deaths and weird events while she loses her sight.” A mystery movie. Worth seeing once.
Boy missing – “Víctor
is a child who is found casually roaming by a country road. His mother,
Patricia, a well-known lawyer who specializes in media trials, soon learns of
her son being found. Victor is taken to hospital and his mother soon follows,
where it is explained by the mother that Víctor is deaf and mute, but can
communicate using sign language which is why Victor didn't answer any of the
questions asked by police. In the police headquarter Víctor explains that he
was kidnapped by a strange man when he entered his school. The police identify
a possible suspect named Charlie, a man with money troubles and an 8-month
pregnant wife. Charlie is unable to explain where he was when Víctor was
kidnapped. Patricia, seeing the inability of the police to arrest Charlie,
contacts her former love interest and Victor's father, Raúl, starting a chain
of events, the consequences of which will be out of control.” A revenge movie
which is quite good. You are always
looking forward to see how it all ends up!
Sleep Tight – “Apartment
concierge Cesar is a miserable person who believes he was born without the
ability to be happy. As a result, he decides his mission is to make life hell
for everyone around him. A majority of the tenants are easy to agitate, but
Clara proves to be harder than the most. So, Cesar goes to creepy extremes to
make this young woman mentally break down. Things get even more complicated in
this twisted relationship when her boyfriend, Marcos, shows up.” An ok kind of
suspense-filled movie.
I will continue
the same-genre movies in the next blog too.
Cheers till next
time!!
