More Web-Series reviews…. First a look at Season 2 of some series…
Hostages 2 – This was released in September 2020 and consisted of the same people from the earlier season with some more additions. This time, the people who took hostages in the first season, are themselves holed up in a building with the police having surrounded them from all sides. Ok kind of a series. As usual, in the end, pointing to a 3rd season. Depending on this season’s success, they might bring out a next season.
Aashram 2 – This was released this month. In this season, one comes to know the real badness of Bobby Deol! With his deadpan face, Bobby Deol keeps doing what he wants to do. The serial gets slow at some places. Ok kind of a series, but a shade lower than the first season. There is no definite ending and one has to wait for the 3rd season to come out.
Stranger 2 – The second season of the Korean series. A gripping series, as entertaining as the first season. In the second season, set two years later, an ethical dispute arises between the Prosecutors' Office and the National Police Agency, with the former wanting discretionary power over all investigative proceedings while the latter seeks for an autonomous authority. In the midst of their respective agencies' conflict, Hwang Si-mok and Han Yeo-jin team up to independently conduct their own investigation on a concealed case.
As usual, excellent acting and a fast-paced series. 16 episodes in total with each episode of about 1-hour duration. Completed watching this series in 3 days, with the last 7 episodes in a single day😊. Available in Netflix.
Whispers – Saw this series in Netflix as the review was good. Saudi Arabian series with English subtitles. Review from www.readysteadycut.com ….
Whispers is the first-ever Saudi Arabian Netflix original series. It has to tell an interesting story; as an eight-part psychological thriller approaching death and its fallout from several different perspectives.
It isn’t just the events, though, but the characters that’re under scrutiny, with personal circumstances and perspectives filtering the reality. The show’s about truth just as much as it’s about how there is no truth, not really, just varied interpretations born of unique psyches, fears, beliefs, and values. While the balance between forward momentum and reinterpretation isn’t always held perfectly, Whispers nevertheless does a good job of building a broader picture by rotating the same pieces into ever-so-slightly different compositions.
Kind of an ok serial. Saw it assuming that the series will be over in one season. Unfortunately, will have to wait for the next season as there is a twist in the end.
Bad Boy Billionaires – This Netflix documentary exposes the truth and investigation on the major corruption scandals, money laundering scandals in India involving Vijay Mallya (Kingfisher Airlines), Subrata Roy (Sahara India) and Nirav Modi (Gitanjali Group). The episode on Satyam Computers was not released as Ramalinga Raju had gone to the court to stop its release😊!!
The series provides info on how these people were able to reach dizzying heights in their respective ventures and how it all collapsed. A well-made documentary that gives you insights on these key people and also how they were perceived by their employees and associates, during their success and after their fall.
Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story – Based on 1992 Indian stock market scam committed by stockbroker Harshad Mehta, the series is adapted from journalist Sucheta Dalal and Debashish Basu's 1992 book The Scam: Who Won, Who Lost, Who Got Away. And since this was based on the book, I also read the book😊. In fact, I read the book after seeing about 8 episodes of the series, with the balance 2 after completing the book. In my opinion, the series is better than the book. The reason being that the director, Hansal Mehta, has concentrated only on the Harshad Mehta story from the book and had given a Bollywood-style treatment to it😊!! The book is more on the fraud perpetuated by the scamsters and does not indulge in hero-worshipping as the series does.
The series is very gripping and well-made. Pratik Gandhi as Harshad and Shreya Dhanwanthary as Sucheta Dalal have played their part quite well. It is a kind of rags-to-riches kind of a story. At his prime Harshad was called the Amitabh Bachchan of stock markets😊!! As I had mentioned in one of my earlier blogs, I managed to sell a software product to a client just by confirming that Harshad Mehta too used our software😊!! A definite watch!!
Cheers till next time!
