37 New Year Resolutions

Welcome to that part of the year, when we all think out a host of resolutions to keep for the year!!  This is the time when our optimism is at its peak when we think of all the things that are waiting to be done by us, which we did try to implement last year and failed😊. We compile a list of things that we would be doing for the coming year, add a sophisticated looking title to the list and pin it up on the fridge door with a magnet.  We feel, now that the list has been made, it will be very easy to keep track of it.

Over the period of the next 10-15 days, some of the items in the list will get stricken out, some would be postponed to be done anytime during the future months and the rest would seem very impractical to do and would hence be cut off the list.  By the end of the month, we would end up where we started.  Doing whatever we were doing last year😊

As per a recent study on the Psychology of keeping New Year Resolutions, the main reason why people don’t stick to their resolutions is that they set too many or they are unrealistic to achieve.  They may also be a victim of False Hope Syndrome.  This is characterized by a person’s unrealistic expectations about the likely speed, amount, ease and consequences of changing their behavior.

Of course, there are ways to keep the resolutions if you are very determined and would like to go ahead with making them stick.  Some of the pointers are as below: -

a)    I read once that if you do something continuously for 21 days, it becomes a habit and you then actually look forward to doing it.  The initial week would be the toughest one, particularly the 3rd and 4th day.  Once you finish the 1st week, then it is supposed to ease off.  By the end of the 21st day, you might also see some improvement which also acts as a motivator to keep you going.

b)  Tell someone about your resolution.  This will act as a safety barrier as well as a face-saver.  You will keep up with the resolution and they might also help you in keeping it. Having grown up in Delhi, I once had a very flowing vocabulary with choicest cuss words in Hindi.  When I needed to cut back on those, I just thought of a person and wondered if I will use those words before that person.  So, every time the cuss words were about to come out, I remembered the person and changed the words to something like “Oh Wow”

c)    Be realistic and take resolutions that you can keep.  These resolutions are not to brag about to someone. Of course, you can do it if you have reached the intended goal of keeping it in the first place.  This is being done for your benefit.  So, select only those that you can do without any outside help and one which you are sure you will be able to keep and finish it till the objective is reached.

Don’t worry if you are not able to keep the resolutions that you intended to do this year.  Next year is always there😊.  Once you know which resolutions to keep and which to discard, you will end up with a small list.  Just do it diligently and enjoy.  Cheers!!
