40 - Reality Show - Super Dancer 2

This blog is different as I am writing about a dance reality show which has fascinated me for the past 5-6 months or so.  Normally I don’t see any channels on TV other than news and sports.  Some months back I saw the promo of this Super Dancer 2 show on Sony TV, while flipping channels, and wanted to see the episodes featuring the dances showcased in the promo.  Needless to say, when I saw the episodes, I was really hooked.

The dancers on this show such grace and skills that they put even the experienced dancers to shame.  For the past 5-6 months, I have seen them blossom from novice performers to professional performers.  Apparently, the auditions were done across the country and top 25-30 kids were selected.  Out of this, 8 were shortlisted and each of the kid was given a “guru” who is an experienced choreographer, to teach them and make them perform on a weekly basis.  The guru also performs with his/her disciple in the show.  They record it in one day and then broadcast it on Saturday and Sunday.  So, you get to see all of them perform over a weekend.  The show comes in Sony TV on Saturdays and Sundays at 8pm.  Don’t worry if you are not able to watch at this time. You can always go to www.sonyliv.com and see the full episodes.

In this last 8, the ages of the kids range from 5 to 13 years.  2 kids are of age 5 and seeing their performance gives one goosepimples!!  All these kids have come from small towns and some have come from very poor background.

Since these are kids, there is also a lot of behind-the-scenes episodes which also brings us much closer to the kids. The answers that they give when they are questioned makes us think about how we used to give answers when we were kids.  Suffice to say, innocence is still left in the kids of the next generation!! For the past 7-8 episodes these 8 kids have been performing and the audience is allowed to vote for them.  Based on the voting, one of the kid is going to be sent back for revision and the final 7 will be left to compete. (the blog is being written before the final 7 have been confirmed).

Each kid has got a special talent.  One dances like a robot, and she is nicknamed Robo Muskaan.  One girl, Shagun, is so flexible that she is called Flexi-gun.  This is what she can do – she can lie on one side with her left hand on her left ear, right leg over the left leg.  She can then take her right leg over her entire body, making it a graceful 180 degrees semi-circle, make it touch the ground over her left ear and bring it back to her left leg !!!  And all of this in one fluent motion.  One is nicknamed the Lakshmi, a 5-year old, whose “thumka” is seen-to-be-believed!!  Her dance master in real-life is physically challenged as in he cannot walk on his legs and teaches both the leg and hand movements to his disciple through his hands.  A boy’s family from Assam had to sell off their cow to bring him into this show and continue his interest in dancing.  His family got gifted a cow and her calf by Baba Ramdev in one of the shows.  One girl got a film offer from Anurag Basu!!

In case you are free and want to spend some time without having to worry about anything, just watch this show on TV or on your mobile/tab and get ready to be emotionally involved!!  Cheers!!
