53 - Coming out of the Social Media
I have deleted
my Facebook account. Of course, the
catalyst was the knowledge that Facebook data has been compromised and my data
might be lying anywhere from Chechnya to Chinchpokli!! I am not sure what they can do with my data
as I was not using the account to post anything. Well, maybe about 10 odd posts from the time
I had opened the account!! I was only
logging in when I will get a mail from Facebook that someone had messaged
me. Or if someone wanted me to like
their post. Or if someone wished me on
my birthday. With closure of my Facebook
account, anyone wanting to wish me would have to actually call me. Else they can keep their wishes to
themselves!!
I am amazed that
there are lots of people out there whose life only revolves around how many
“likes” they get on their posts. These
people don’t have any other life and most will get into some kind of depression
if they don’t get sufficient “likes”. If
you are eating out, concentrate on the eating, rather than taking a picture of
what you are eating and sharing as a post.
Your phone might fall on the food, thereby damaging it, the food might
get cold and stale or your reputation would have fallen one notch down in the
eyes of the people in your neighboring tables.
I have deleted
my LinkedIn account too. I was only
getting requests for connections and birthday wishes. Majority of the connections I used to ignore
and delete. When I deleted the Facebook
account, I deleted this also. Both the
vendors took 2 weeks to delete my account.
Now I am left
with WhatsApp only as my social media connection. I think I will keep this as I get lot of
interesting videos and jokes through my 4 groups that I am a member of. Yes, you heard it right, only “4”
groups!! I have removed myself from all
other groups. Also, I delete all the
messages at the end of the day or the next day.
That way, my phone is also cleared from all the clutter taking up the
phone space. Earlier I used to forward
interesting videos to many contacts in my group. Later I found that I start getting more
videos, but not to my taste, from these contacts! Now I forward messages to selected (not more
than 3-4) people from my contact only.
I have never
joined Twitter, Instagram or any other such social media sites. You have your own life that you are
enjoying. Why talk about it to others
and get them jealous 😊
or why do you want to know about their daily life? If it is that important, they will call and
tell you. Or if something great has
happened or about to happen in your life, you will call them and share it with
them. Till such time, just enjoy your
life without thinking about anything else.
My advice will
be to quit all the social media.
Inculcate a hobby with all the free time that you will have without
having to constantly check for new posts or liking other posts. Call and speak to real people rather than
“talking” with typed statements.
Cheers!!
