5 Adding Apps to your Mobile

We all have so many different apps and regularly add more and more apps to our mobile phone.  Whatever term and conditions the App asks us to confirm, we just tick all the boxes and confirm our acceptance, without ever going through what all it contains.  Let me take a couple of apps that we normally have in our phone and tell you what all you have “signed up” for or “signed away” for😊

Bookmyshow – This is a popular app through which you make movie bookings.  It has access to ALL your Contacts, it can track where you are currently, it can read who all have called you, it can read your SMS’s and also see your phone’s storage data.

Ola and Uber – 2 of the most popular taxi calling apps in India.  Ola has access to all the above mentioned items in your phone.  Uber too has the access, except for the SMS and storage section.

ICICI Bank App – Another popular app if you are an ICICI Bank customer. In addition to all the above, it also accesses your Calendar and the Camera.  I presume other Banking Apps too will ask for similar access.

WhatsApp – Another popular chatting app.  In addition to accessing your Camera, Contacts, SMS and Storage, it also has access to your Microphone.  I don’t know for what.  Maybe in their future versions, they will use the microphone to inform you of arriving new messages😊

Of course all the Apps will claim that they do not use any of the above data. But once you have accepted the conditions, there is no way of knowing, right!!

Having your contact list means they have your contacts names and mobile numbers; you might have saved your bank account numbers and pincode also in your contacts😊.  That too is now with them.  Having the right to read your SMS means, all the messages that you have sent or will be sending in the future, is now being monitored by someone else too😊.

The data accessed from your phone are then sold off to advertisers who then target you with ads of their products when you are browsing the net using the mobile.  Or they may be sending you various SMS’s soliciting you with their offers/schemes/discount coupons.

Of course, some apps will not work in case you do not accept the terms and conditions.  At that time, you have to make a call as to whether you still need to install the App or not.

Please understand that in life nothing is free.  If someone is offering you something for free, look at what they are going to get!!

From now onward, while adding any new App in your mobile, check and recheck all the rights that you are handing over and if you are comfortable with that, go ahead and install the App.  Happy Apping!! Cheers!
